1889 · A note on the year
Charles Chaplin was born in Walworth, South London, on the sixteenth of April, 1889. He grew up in a city where the barbershop was the one room on the high street a working man could sit down in for thirty minutes and have someone pay him close attention.
That ritual stayed with him. Decades later he ended The Great Dictator with a five-minute speech delivered by a barber, one of the most quoted scenes in cinema. He didn't pick the trade by accident.
1889 isn't our founding year. It is the year we measure against. The same craft, the same close attention, the same idea that thirty minutes in a barber's chair is something a man should look forward to.
Sevenoaks, today. Chaplins, always.
"I'm a barber myself, so I'm very particular about who I trust with my hair and beard. I go to Sam. Every time he delivers at the highest level."
